According to the AAA, 91.3 million Americans will be hitting the roads to visit friends and/or relatives 50 miles or farther from home this holiday season. And many of them will be making the trip with one or more family pets in tow, rather than have them boarded or sat with back home.
But taking Fido or Fifi along on a road trip has its own challenges, both for the pets and their owners.
The home state of Google Inc., the pioneering company in driverless cars, has just taken steps to make life more difficult -- not just for Google, but for all of us who would like to see driverless cars hit the road as soon as possible.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles has proposed new rules for driverless cars that would prohibit cars without a steering wheel or a brake pedal -- or a human driver ready to take the wheel. Obviously, this would be an enormous setback for Google’s program, which is evolving toward smaller, lower-speed vehicles with none of these things. In my opinion, it would also be a setback for the evolution of driverless cars.

California roadways are starting to get crowded with autonomous vehicles.
Even though the first retail self-driving vehicles aren’t expected to roll into showrooms until 2020, at the earliest, a growing number of automakers have begun testing their technology out on public roads. And Ford Motor Co. is the latest to get a permit from the Golden State, one of the first to create a special license for autonomous vehicles.
