March 23, 2022 - There are no benefits to bullying in the workplace - not to the people suffering it or the employees witnessing it, and not to the company’s bottom line. It does not make organizations more competitive, weed out the weak, or give anyone an edge.
It cannot be justified as “just the way things are done” or by the idea that because some workers dealt with it, everyone should, that it’s a kind of “paying dues.” More and more employees are recognizing that. Right now, we’re in the midst of a “great resignation” that’s driven in part by people no longer tolerating toxic workplaces.
With fewer employees willing to buy into cultures that enable bullying - and a growing cohort of workplace leaders learning, perhaps the hard way, that it’s in their best interest to root it out - change is possible. At the heart of this change is building an environment where bullies of any kind are understood to be unacceptable.
March 24, 2022 - Uber will shortly allow for the hailing of rides with all of New York City's 14,000 taxi cabs directly through its app. According to The Wall Street Journal, this landmark agreement is the first such citywide partnership brokered in the US.
The plan calls for the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission to integrate its own taxi-hailing software with Uber. In exchange for displaying NYC's iconic yellow cabs on its app beginning this spring, Uber will receive an unspecified cut of every fare.
For consumers, this deal means more flexibility with a greater number of vehicles to choose from. An Uber spokesperson characterized the deal as "a win/win: Taxi drivers will get more access to demand, cities will get fewer empty miles driven, and riders will have access to more ride options."
March 23, 2022 - California Gov. Gavin Newsom is proposing a stipend of up to $800 as part of an $11 billion relief package designed to help state residents offset high gas prices. The payouts will be tied to vehicle registrations.
For people who don’t have cars, Newsom wants the state to pay for their bus or train fare for three months. His proposal would give free rides to 3 million people per day.
At least a dozen states have proposed giving rebate checks of several hundred dollars directly to taxpayers. The governors of Maryland and Georgia signed laws temporarily suspending their state’s gas taxes.
Fleets are having to plan for the worst and hope for the best in this increasingly litigious society, and that’s one big reason why you need a specific safety component in your fleet policy.
Despite supply chain challenges and more, this seasoned fleet manager has decided that it’s best to make due with current processes - rather than changing them and then trying to change them back again down the road.
