The Plot Thickens in Car Rental as Avis Buys Payless
Acquisitions continue to ricochet through the car rental business. Avis just bought Payless Car Rental to give it a competitive edge in discount car rentals. Avis is also competing for market share, and witnessed Hertz achieve regulatory approval recently for its $2.3 billion purchase of Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group. The Payless purchase price was only 10% what was paid for Zipcar Inc., the largest car sharing company, earlier this year. Car and ride sharing is now highly competitive with car rental giants as Avis, Hertz, and Enterprise take big strides forward in this niche……
