The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced it’s launching a pilot program to equip vehicles with sensors that can detect drunk driving by testing the air — and it’s starting with installing them in department-owned vehicles.
Unlike a breathalyzer, the new breath sensor technology does not require individuals to blow directly into a tube. Instead, the sensors are installed on the driver’s side dashboard, which allows drivers to enter the car and breathe as they normally would. According to the DADSS website, the system measures blood alcohol percentage in a driver’s breath by taking take instantaneous readings. The sensors can “accurately and reliably distinguish” between the driver’s breath and that of any passengers.

Traffic deaths in the United States decreased by 3.3% during the first half of 2023, according to US auto safety regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 19,515 people died in traffic accidents so far this year compared to 20,190 deaths during the same period in 2022.
There have been many reasons cited for why deaths increased despite there being fewer people on the roads. Many experts, like Acting NHTSA Administrator Ann Carlson, believe that with fewer cars on the road, many drivers decided to take more risks. "I do think people got in the habit of speeding more," Carlson said, adding that some drivers "got a sense they could get away with it probably."
The introduction of BrightDrop’s electric vans within Ryder’s rental fleet marks a key step in the company’s efforts to meet the rising demand and adoption of commercial electric vehicles in the U.S. Earlier this year, Ryder announced plans to introduce 4,000 BrightDrop electric vans to its fleet through 2025, with the first 200 ordered this year.
“Electrifying commercial fleets can reduce operating emissions without sacrificing range, safety or performance,” said Steve Hornyak, chief commercial officer for BrightDrop. “By adding BrightDrop EVs to its fleet offerings, Ryder is helping make electrification possible for companies big and small.”
