Even before the Arab uprisings in the Middle East, the price of gasoline was heading toward $4 a gallon. Many analysts now see this level being reached sometime this year. Automakers are already seeing an uptick in interest in their alternative-fuel and/or most fuel-efficient models, and are confident sales of those vehicles will increase significantly with the rise of fuel prices.

For the first time since September 2010, independent dealers have outsold franchised dealers in the used vehicle category. The numbers are lower for both independents and franchised for used vehicle sales compared to September, which was the six month in a row that both parties sold more than one million used vehicles in that month.
Automakers are making a big deal out of advertising that they've joined the 40 mpg club in EPA mileage ratings. This might mean only a 40 or more mpg rating in highway, and not necessarily in city and combined ratings. It does seem to be the current benchmark for meeting increasing fuel economy standards.
