New York is "hailing" a new era of urban mobility today, as the city with the nation?s largest taxi fleet has selected Nissan to design and supply the next-generation "Taxi of Tomorrow." The announcements were made today during a City Hall press briefing that included Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Nissan Americas Chairman Carlos Tavares.
Automakers are seeing signs cost reduction is in the works for battery-powered vehicles coming through their production lines. Ford's next-generation hybrid powertrain could have its cost reduced by as much as 30%. GM, too, has a cost reduction plan all the way through to 2020 for next generations of its Volt, which will cut as much as $10,000 from its current price.
Solar-powered transportation modules offer huge potential for emissions reductions and reducing the crippling effect of rising fuel prices. Switzerland's Solar Impulse Team said its airplane, which is the first designed to fly day and night without requiring fuel or producing carbon emissions, will soar to Brussels this week. The Solar Impulse has 12,000 solar cells built into its 193-foot wings.
The GSA, General Services Administration, oversees a fleet of 600,000 vehicles and purchases 60,000 to 65,000 vehicles annually. President Obama has directed the GSA to buy only advanced technology vehicles by 2015. These vehicles include hybrids, electrics, E85 and fuel cell vehicles.
