Toyota Temporarily Stops Self-Driving Vehicle Tests

The New York Times

After the Uber self-driving vehicle accident in Tempe, Arizona, Toyota Motor is suspending tests of autonomous vehicles on public roads, and will continue the tests at three enclosed proving grounds.

Toyota has a fleet of test vehicles that can drive themselves, although engineers and safety drivers ride along to take control if necessary — the same arrangement that was used in the Uber vehicle.

“We’ve told our drivers to take a couple of days off so we can assess the situation,” said Rick Bourgoise, a Toyota spokesman.

Does Pedestrian Safety Equate to an ‘Unfair’ Trade Practice?

Forbes

Trump's remark that the ‘bowling ball’ test on the hood of passenger cars is preventing American automobiles from entering the Japanese market, isn't sitting well with safety experts.

The purpose of pedestrian protection regulations are to soften car fronts and allow bonnet hoods to deform in a way which reduces the severity of a pedestrian impacting on the hard engine bay - features that have been applied in the European Union and Japan since 2005.

“In my twenty years plus experience of vehicle safety I have never encountered a head of state from a major automobile producing country attempt to ‘weaponize’ a safety feature as an alleged ‘unfair’ trade practice,” said David Ward, secretary general of the Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP), a nonprofit based in London. “President Trump’s comment, whether intended as a joke or not,” showed no understanding and was a misrepresentation."

New Technologies All Around

It’s no secret that the constant influx of new technologies is constantly changing our world, and they’re changing the fleet industry as well. For today’s issue, AmeriFleet’s Kathy Massey has written about Three Commonly Overlooked Money-Saving Applications of Fleet Analytics - it's a great read.

We also feature an insightful video interview we got with ARI’s Don Woods at the Work Truck Show, where he speaks to building client engagement around new technologies, including Alexa.

Organizations strive to reduce accidents across their fleet, to protect their drivers, the public, and their CSA scores. Safety programs that reward accident-free drivers and provide regular employee training are helpful tools, but the most effective safety programs reduce risky behavior by leveraging real-time information about driving habits and incidents. In this webinar, learn how modern sensor technology can provide a live window into what's really happening on the road -- and how you can use this information to build a comprehensive program that gets buy-in and results.
