The Indiana wireless EV charging project is apparently the first of its kind in the US. The system is based on a new form of magnetized concrete developed by the German startup Magment GmbH.
“Dynamic charging is the future solution for charging electric vehicles where devices installed in highway pavements will deliver electrical energy to battery electric vehicles on the road using a magnetic field,” Magment explained. “An antenna mounted to the vehicle bottom passes through the magnetic field generating an electrical current that charges the batteries.”
A cornerstone of bp's $1 billion investment includes an intention to bring fast charging infrastructure to Hertz locations in more than a dozen major cities. bp currently offers 22,000 EV charge points worldwide.
A number of the fast-charging installations will include gigahubs locations. These are large-scale fast charging hubs, such as one location previously announced by bp and Hertz at Los Angeles International Airport. The hubs will serve rideshare and taxi drivers, car rental customers and the general public at high-demand locations, such as airports. The buildout will be informed by telematics from Hertz’s fleet of connected cars.
As electric vehicles charge headlong into the future, early adopters and auto-makers have both been learning a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of electric vehicles. Until very recently, range and range anxiety have been some of the biggest obstacles to the proliferation of electric vehicles.
According to a study by Escalent, 64% of EV owners polled have never come close to running out of charge, while 28% say they have come close. Only 8% of EV owners have run out of charge completely. Furthermore, the research noted that 73% of owners expect to charge their electric vehicles at home. While this data is encouraging for EV owners, it's also indicative that range fear may be largely unwarranted.
