Average commute times in the US just keep growing, increasing to 25.5 minutes in the decade between 1990 - 2000. California has the worst traffic jams with Los Angeles and the San Francisco metropolitan area coming in first and second. The estimated annual cost of traffic delays is $63.1 billion, wasting more than 2.3 billion gallons of fuel.
Older workers are being heavily recruited to fill the critical shortage of 20,000 vacant truck driver positions. Many have been laid off or forced into early retirement from other jobs, and trucking companies view them as experienced and more responsible with valuable life experience to offer.
About 44,000 people will have died in traffic accidents in the U.S. in 2006, far more than caused by wars, terrorist attacks or gang violence. But the story is virtually ignored by the public, even though traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for all people aged 3 to 33.
