Nissan is looking at ways to deal with fears car buyers have about the limited range of LEAF batteries and being stranded far from home. One possible solution is making a long-range alternative part of the package - such as a free rental of a gasoline engine Nissan car through its dealerships or a car rental company.
Most auto dealers will tell you that more buyers ask about how to connect an iPhone to a car or about the latest collision avoidance systems than they do about how quickly a car goes from zero to 60. So automakers are pumping up the technology.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says he believes motorists are distracted by any use of mobile phones while driving, including hands-free calls, as his department begins research that may lead him to push for a ban. LaHood, whose campaign against texting and making calls while driving has led to restrictions in 30 states, says his concerns extend to vehicle information and entertainment systems such as Ford Motor's Sync and General Motors' OnStar.
Tire Rack, a direct-to-consumer retailer that does a lot of tire testing, says buying fuel-efficient tires can bolster fuel economy 4-7%. And that keeping those same tires properly inflated can improve fuel economy another 2-3%. Unfortunately, many consumers replace tires with cheaper models that get less impressive fuel economy.
