Domestic brands are recapturing consumer interest, thanks in part to Ford's current sales numbers and improving quality reports. GM is also experiencing strong demand and Chrysler is gaining traction as both companies recover following bankruptcies and bailout loans.
The OPENLANE September US Market Index hit 111, up five points from August and the highest ever on record. The previous mark was 110 for November and December 2009. Only one segment, minivans, saw prices slide downward.
Honda took the title for the fifth year in a row in the Union of Concerned Scientists' ranking of the top 8 automakers based on average per-mile smog pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in their fleet of sold vehicles. Honda's score reflected a 14% cleaner fleet than that of top 8 manufacturers combined; Toyota and Hyundai tied for second place.
The Transportation Department says traffic deaths tied to distracted drivers fell 6% in 2009. The actual number was 5,474 deaths, compared to 5,838 the previous year. Overall, distracted-driving deaths accounted for 16% of 2009 road fatalities.
