New vehicles in the U.S. are required to have tire pressure monitor sensors, and similar regulations are coming to Europe. But some TPMS systems have problems with false readings, so engineers are working on advanced, smarter sensors that are also more convenient.
A U.S. appellate court turned down a request from utilities, oil refiners, and the state of Texas to delay regulation of greenhouse gas emissions by the EPA. The ruling will allow the Obama administration to continue with its plan to have nationwide limits on greenhouse gases from cars and trucks, and from large facilities such as coal-fired power plants, oil refineries, and factories.
A bipartisan group of 53 Congressional representatives has asked the EPA and DOT to remove the suggested A through D window sticker grading system starting in 2012. Representatives, many of them members of Congressional Automotive Caucus, urged the EPA to design a new label that doesn't marginalize the most important thing a fuel economy label should emphasize.

Manufacturers and entrepreneurs are developing electronic aids to prevent accidents by sleep deprived drivers. Mercedes has an Attention Assist system while Saab is installing a Driver Attention Warning System. Maybe the most interesting product is a portable, battery-powered, dash mounted device called ASP or Anti-Sleep Pilot. Only available in Scandinavia, currently ASP uses questions and behavior measurements to warn a driver to stop driving.
