Battery-electric vehicles will become competitive with gas-powered cars within five years from now, said the optimistic Energy Secretary Steven Chu. This will be occurring as technological advancements and greater EV adoption help push down battery costs and increase single-charge ranges. More automakers are developing electric-drive vehicles and federal government funding improvements in lithium ion battery technology, he said.
