The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released the 2013 Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data that shows a 3.1 percent decrease from the previous year and a nearly 25 percent decline in overall highway deaths since 2004. In 2013, 32,719 people died in traffic crashes. The estimated number of people injured in crashes also declined by 2.1 percent.

Keyfree Technologies plans to introduce what it is billing as the “world’s first digital car key solution” during a preview at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show. Unlike traditional, metal car keys, or more modern wireless keyfobs, the company’s system would use a digital smartphone app to control a vehicle’s doors and ignition.

Belgium-based global fleet software provider, Sofico, is celebrating a successful 2014 which saw a number of new go-lives for its Miles system, multiple ongoing implementation projects and the strategic acquisition of Car Systems in France.
LeasePlan Monitor: 57 percent of US drivers admitted to calling while driving.
A recent global LeasePlan Driver Survey performed by TNS, surveyed 3,377 company car drivers in 20 countries. LeasePlan recognized a growing interest from fleet managers in topics regarding the individual driver, such as safety and driver behavior. For example, in the survey, half of the drivers said the companies they are working for are focusing on driver safety.
In the US, 45% of the drivers said that the company regularly sends e-mails with tips & tricks regarding driving safety. Yet most drivers still multitask when driving. Nearly a third (30%) of all drivers questioned said they can attend courses and workshops or can do tests on safe driving. Almost the same number of drivers (29%) globally receives regular information and tips from their employers on their driving behavior.
