US and Mexican long-haul trucks will begin cross-border operations in the face of opposition from safety and consumer organizations. Research at Volvo Technology in Sweden finds striking performance similarities between drowsy and drunk drivers. Loss of co-ordination, motor skills, response times, vision, attentiveness and cognitive ability and attitude are similarities between both drunk and drowsy drivers. Researchers say the number of traffic fatalities would be greatly reduced if fewer drivers were drowsy.
