The NAAA membership is backing a plan to develop an online search portal that would give dealers access to all auction inventory. The idea has been tossed around since 2006, and officials are now hoping for a 2008 release.
Drug and alcohol abuse among truck drivers has remained at 2 - 2.5% since testing began. Only 5 states have databases to track violations. The ATA is asking Congress to fund creation of a national database aimed at getting problem drug and/or alcohol users off the road permanently by making it easier for carriers to check status.
Edmunds.com reports that average new-car incentive for July was $2,524, up $102 from previous month. Domestic and European automakers averaged around $3,200 while Japanese and Korean automakers were under $1,700.
Hertz has started a low-cost car rental company called Simply Wheelz by Hertz that will compete directly with Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Thrifty, and Payless. Renters will book online, then use self-service kiosks that print out their agreements. Rates will start at $15 per weekend day, and $94 per week.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says repairing luxury cars after minor fender benders costs significantly more than other vehicles. Officials cite flimsy bumpers unable to absorb any energy in a crash. The tests found that sliding under the bumpers of the vehicles they struck caused extensive damage to many of the luxury autos.
