Navman Wireless North America has added automatic driver hours reporting to its OnlineAVL2 vehicle tracking and logistics system based on vehicle ignition status. Reports are emailed to managers and payroll processors saving time and money by making the process fully electronic.
A bipartisan Congressional National Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission just completed a two-year study. Their report predicts that only $32B annually will be raised by current fuel taxes in future years whereas $100B will be required to meet US transportation needs.
Automakers are filing their audited annual reports with US regulators. Ford will have sufficient cash to survive 2009 even without government bailout. GM will likely get a "going concern" statement from their auditors despite emergency federal loans.
Ford has upgraded its Transit Connect small cargo van made in Turkey for import to the US as a 2010 model. It carries a 1,600-pound, 135 cubic foot cargo and gets 22 city, 25 highway mpg in a front-wheel drive vehicle designed for city maneuvering.
GM told Congress that its restructuring plans include closing another five US factories and cutting 49K jobs globally. Even so, it needs up to $30B more in government bailout on top of $13.4B in federal loans it already has received to avoid bankruptcy in 2009.
