Shortly before its annual conference, the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Institute conducted a survey of company fleet managers and found that half of them will be purchasing alternative fuel vehicles in the next three years. Larger companies and those already having some of these vehicles in their fleets are more likely to purchase more of them.
Truck associations have urged Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to oppose legislation that would transfer authority to the EPA to set fuel efficiency regulations for medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Provisions are contained in bills that passed through the House last year and is now out of a Senate committee. Under a 2007 law, NHTSA is setting rules for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.
Starting in June 2012, trucking companies with 10%+ violations of hours of service rules are required to install electronic onboard recorders for two years on all trucks. FMCSA is also encouraging voluntary use of recorders. Rulemaking is expected soon on even stricter requirements to improve safety.
