New U.S. Transportation Secretary Doesn’t Seem To Know Anything About Autonomous Cars
Here’s Elaine Chao, the new U.S. Transportation Secretary who is concerned about the comfort level citizens have toward autonomous cars, talking about self-driving cars this week: “We have now self-driving cars. We have level-two self-driving cars. They can drive on the highway, follow the white lines on the highway, and there’s really no need for any person to be seated and controlling any of the instruments.”
Come again?
When Chao expressed that she understands citizens need to better understand self-driving tech, it was a show for optimism; only one-in-four Americans trust the idea of a robot car right now. But this remark? This doesn’t jibe with reality.

Distracted Driving — When Your Life & Livelihood Are on the Line
More companies are doing the right thing and banning all cellphone use, other than preset GPS route guidance, behind the wheel for employees driving a company car or doing company business.
That means no texting of any kind at any time (including at stoplights) and no calls of any kind including hands-free (that’s right, countless studies over many years prove there is virtually NO difference in distraction between hands-free and hand-held calls). Violate the ban, and you could get fired.
Don’t think it’s a crisis? Rethink it. Translating the most recent available data on annual road fatalities into the equivalent number of airplane crashes, there would be 15 plane crashes of average size commercial planes a month in the US. Try wrapping your brain around that—imagine if 15 airplanes were crashing each month. Surely every corporation and household would notice. We would not accept this.
ACT Expo 2017: UPS Spotlights Addition to Massive Alt-Fuel Vehicle Fleet
Among the many alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) fleets touted at this year’s Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo, held in Long Beach, Calif., there was one company that stood out for the success of its massive AFV and advanced vehicle technology fleet.
UPS, the delivery company with a strong sustainability corporate policy, has been making strides in the AFV market for years, having deployed more than 8,300 AFVs across the globe – and it looks like it’s far from finished.
On Tuesday, May 2, UPS announced the addition of its first fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) to its “Rolling Laboratory” fleet and displayed its chassis and powertrain for attendees at the ACT Expo.
