Managing a fleet involves constantly dealing with disruptions while trying to keep as many vehicles running as possible. The one certainty in fleet management is that maintenance is unavoidable, even if the exact timing of issues isn’t clear. Supply chain issues and unpredictable tariffs are making maintenance more costly than ever, but companies like Kooner Fleet Management Solutions are helping fleets save money through comprehensive mobile maintenance.
Kooner brings maintenance services directly to fleets, meeting them on-site and in the field as needed. The company helps fleet managers reduce downtime with 24/7 roadside assistance and complete support, while the FleetIQ app offers real-time updates on a single screen. Kooner provides discounted national pricing on parts, and its stocked warehouse of high-demand parts ensures fleets always have what they need readily available.
To learn more about Kooner’s on-site and mobile maintenance services, FleetIQ, and how the company works with fleets to cut overall costs, we spoke with Bill Cooper, VP of Sales for Kooner Fleet Management Solutions.
Tell me about Kooner Fleet Management Solutions and the kinds of fleets you serve.
Kooner offers on-site and mobile maintenance for all types of fleets, including middle-mile, last-mile, heavy-duty trucks, and light-duty vehicles. We service fleets whose vehicles return to a central location each night. These are typical hub-and-spoke operations, like traditional trucking companies transporting goods between locations, grocery chains, utility providers, and construction firms with vehicles that can’t be taken offsite for service without causing disruption. Kooner provides comprehensive support, including on-site maintenance, mobile services, and 24/7 roadside assistance.
Can you talk about the importance of finding the proper on-site fleet maintenance and mobile truck repair?
When choosing a partner, you want someone who can meet your business needs. Ultimately, it’s about ensuring uptime. Whenever your vehicle is sitting idle, whether at a repair shop or on the side of the road, you’re losing revenue. It’s vital to have a partner who understands your needs, knows your business, and can service your fleet effectively.
Having a single source for all your maintenance needs is also helpful. Whether it’s DOT and BIT inspections, lube, oil, and filter services, tire rotations and replacements, or even trailer repair for long-haul operators, Kooner can handle almost anything you require.
What is FleetIQ? How can that help fleets?
FleetIQ was originally developed for one of our key clients, and now we’re offering it to all fleet managers. It provides a comprehensive view of your entire fleet through a single interface in one application.
Let’s say you’re a typical fleet manager in Kansas City whose truck breaks down outside of Fort Worth. Instead of relying on calls or text messages for updates, you can use FleetIQ to submit a work order, watch a vehicle get dispatched to your driver, and receive pictures when they arrive. The entire work order can be closed out safely on the side of the road, getting your driver back up and running quickly. FleetIQ also integrates via API with a wide range of services your fleet may already use, including GPS, dispatching, and routing.
What are some concerns you’ve heard from your clients? What is Kooner Fleet Management doing to help them?
Talk to any fleet in the transportation industry, and you’ll hear the same thing: costs are rising. Whether it’s increasing fuel prices or tariffs that boost the price of imported tires, expenses are going up. Kooner can assist with this in more ways than just offering national price discounts on parts. We optimize vehicle uptime, making sure that the vehicles on a fleet manager’s lot are actually generating revenue.
At our only brick-and-mortar location in Sacramento, we have a warehouse that stores frequently called-upon parts. That way, we can overnight them when a fleet needs them, and our technician can be on-site the next day. This helps reduce costs by preventing vehicles from sitting idle waiting for delayed parts and by providing access to national account pricing.
Can you talk about your experience in the fleet space?
I joined Kooner as Vice President of Sales after taking a five-year break from the fleet industry. My first job after college was at Enterprise Rent-A-Car (and yes, I was one of those people who lost a tie while vacuuming the rental car after it was returned). I spent six years in fleet management, where I learned about vehicle acquisition, disposal, maintenance, and fuel management.
After I left, I joined Wright Express, now known as WEX. I worked there for over twenty years, initially spending the first two-thirds of my career in sales and marketing before transitioning into a business executive role. During COVID, I moved between several startups until I had the chance to join Kooner. This is a company that’s genuinely aiming to transform the fleet industry. The founder, Gary Kooner, is building a world-class team to help propel the business into its next phase of growth.
