SUVs are common targets of theft in the New York metropolitan area. The vehicles are often unrecovered, stripped down for parts and exported to other nations. There were 2,438 SUVs stolen from Jan. 1, 2008 to June 30, 2012, with 725 of them unrecovered according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
