Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) are fascinating for a lot of people because they represent the latest in connected car and cool dashboard technologies out on the road. That will be increasing – Pike Research says that by 2017, 80% of PEVs will have connected vehicle systems installed – offering live traffic, weather, streaming content, and cloud-based computing applications. PEV telematics are expected to play a significant role in the smart grid, as well. The ability of these vehicles to communicate with both utilities and the grid will help utilities anticipate the location and duration of PEV charging, and give drivers access to charging station locations and technologies.
