MasTec Advanced Technologies Integrates Data Systems to Help Streamline Fleet Operations

It’s impossible to solve a problem you don’t know exists.

Upon integrating its technology with telematics provider Geotab to create an environment in which its all of its systems were able to communicate seamlessly with the ARI® fleet management system, MasTec Advanced Technologies, a communications and infrastructure installation division of MasTec, quickly learned a lot more about their fleet.

“The new detailed views give us broader visibility and improved operational rigor,” said Brian Santarcangelo, VP, Technology Solutions at MasTec AT. “We can monitor who is driving each of our vehicles and know what’s happening within our operating environment in real time.”

To advance their insights and operations, MasTec AT went to ARI, the leading global fleet services provider specializing in complex car and truck fleets, with whom they had been working since 2012, for help with a solution. ARI and telematics provider Geotab worked to develop an approach that would meet MasTec AT’s needs and deliver added value through intuitive data collection, integration and analysis.

The technological integration allowed MasTec to synthesize all of their data to create a more comprehensive analysis of their fleet of 4,500 drivers and 4,300 vehicles, which travel nearly 100 million miles a year.

“The question was how we could bring different data points together and layer them to come up with a solution,” said Jeff Cole, director of strategic accounts for ARI. “The integrity of the data was critical and Geotab’s advanced telematics systems fueled ARI’s ability to uncover efficiencies. This has allowed MasTec to do a lot of things they couldn’t do before.”

The new technological ecosystem has streamlined MasTec’s fleet operations. For example, instead of manually assigning a driver to a vehicle, this process is now automated based on the location of the jobsite.

“A streamlined operation with improved data translates into better workforce management and improved operations,” Santarcangelo added. “We know with certainty that technicians are spending less time behind the wheel and more time on the jobsite. We know this because we have the data.”

When an issue arises with a vehicle, people who need to be aware are alerted immediately. With the data they started collecting, MasTec AT also was able to enhance their driver safety program to focus on the behavior of their drivers. Insights from the ARI and Geotab solutions are helping to fuel a new safety program at MasTec whereby drivers are recognized for safe behaviors that others can emulate.
