A review underway by the Financial Accounting Standards Board of off-balance-sheet lease accounting could have serious implications for companies’ debt/equity ratios. An estimated $300B in leases do not appear on the balance sheets of the S&P top 500 companies, and adding leases as liabilities would significantly change the companies’ indebtedness picture.
