Alan Shaw, former chief executive of Codexis Inc., and chemist has pulled out of the renewable energy field, turning to natural gas. According to Shaw, it’s impossible to turn a profit from inedible crops and plant waste. Shaw’s statements contradict the emerging segment of biofuels, which has invested about $3 billion since 2008 in processes that turn biomass into new types of fuel.
