What’s Needed for Self-Driving Cars to Excel is Already in the Car

Self-driving cars are coming soon than you’d think, says a study by KMPG and Center for Automotive Research says. It may sound far off to many people, and some have concerns over losing their freedom of mobility. Here are a few of the key points of the “Self-Driving Car: The Next Revolution” study and why this is probably closer than it may appear:

1. The convergence of sensor-based and communication-based vehicle technologies will have a lot to do with it. This will mean solutions to our worst transportation problems – the high cost of traffic crashes and transportation infrastructure, the vast amount of time wasted in traffic jams, and the wasted urban space given to parking lots.

2. The convergence of sensor-based and connected vehicle technologies will be happening and will help adoption of both systems. Convergence brings enhanced mobility and safety, and reduced environmental impacts.

3. The implications are far reaching for the traditional automotive value chain and beyond.

4. There is a big market for these cars – not just acceptance slightly, but a big shift that will be the engine pulling the auto industry forward.

5. The main point is this: self-driving cars are already in the works with what we have on the roads today and what’s coming soon. Automotive and technology companies are investing a lot in connected and autonomous technologies and applications. Companies are trying out competing and collaborating at the same time. The automotive value chain will be shifting over time, and non-traditional firms are expected to play a more significant role.
