Consumers often believe that SUVs are safer than cars in crashes because of their additional weight and the fact that passengers sit higher in the vehicles. But recent IIHS side impact tests reveal that it ain’t necessarily so. GM’s TrailBlazer and Chrysler’s Jeep Grand Cherokee were found to offer significantly less crash protection due to their weak side structures and lack of torso-protecting airbags.
