Active, healthy adults over 50 metabolize alcohol at similar rates to younger adults, but their cognitive skills and reaction times are slower due to age-related declines. This coupled with older adults underestimating their degree of impairment is a serious safety risk and partly responsible for 13K alcohol-related deaths in the US as of 2007.
