The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a safety standard intended to prevent occupants from being ejected through the side windows in accidents and requires automakers to incorporate technology designed to protect both belted and unbelted passengers. It is estimated the safety technology will cost $31 per vehicle, save 373 lives, and prevent 476 serious injuries annually. Large-volume automakers must install ejection-mitigation provisions in 25 percent of their vehicles starting in 2013.
