A Winning Time in Tucson!

I’m writing this from AFLA’s Forward Together conference in Tucson, which has so far been an exceptional experience. The days here have been chock-full of engaging speakers, great learning sessions and tons of wonderful networking in an amazingly gorgeous session. Everyone I’ve spoken to here is having a wonderful (and I would say “winning”) time.

Speaking of winning, we would like to give a great, big Congratulations to all of the awards winners: AFLA president Mike Antich presented awards to Jonathan Kamanns from Boehringer Ingleheim for Edward J. Bobit’s Fleet Manager of the Year; Patrick Mitchell from Enel North America for Fleet Visionary; Chuck Parker from Automotive Information Network, Tom Coffey from Merchants Fleet and our own Janice Sutton for the Fleet Hall of Fame!

Introducing Proactive Driver Coaching: Empower Drivers to Build Safe Habits on the Road Introducing Proactive Driver Coaching: Empower Drivers to Build Safe Habits on the Road

Driver safety is always a top priority—but in a tight labor market, a strong safety program is more important than ever for organizations seeking to attract and retain talent.

The commercial driver shortage has increased safety concerns, as experienced drivers leave the industry and newer drivers take their place.

This shift has brought even more attention to the importance of driver training and coaching.

Extending Driver Risk Management Benefits to ALL Employees and Their Families Extending Driver Risk Management Benefits to ALL Employees and Their Families

By Ed Dubens, CEO/Founder of eDriving

The benefits of implementing a driver risk management program – reduced collisions, incidents, injuries, license violations, carbon emissions, and reduced overall cost of vehicle ownership – are generally well understood by organizations with employees driving for work purposes.

They recognize that a holistic risk management program that helps drivers identify their risky habits and change those with the help of training, coaching, and gamification, provides long-lasting and often life-saving benefits.

So, why limit these life-changing and life-saving benefits solely to those employees driving for work purposes?

CARFAX: Hurricane Ian Damaged Hundreds of Thousands of Cars

CARFAX estimates the widespread flooding across Florida and the Carolinas in the wake of Hurricane Ian, potentially damaged as many as 358,000 vehicles. Used-car shoppers need to be aware that these waterlogged vehicles could resurface anywhere around the country.

“We are seeing these flooded cars show up all around the country, putting unsuspecting buyers at risk,” said Emilie Voss, CARFAX spokesperson. “Cosmetically these cars might look great, but if you don’t know what to look for, it’s nearly impossible to tell they are literally rotting from the inside out.”

IIHS: Many People Treat Partially Automated Vehicles as Self-Driving IIHS: Many People Treat Partially Automated Vehicles as Self-Driving

Drivers who use partial automation on a regular basis often treat their vehicles as fully self-driving despite widespread warnings and numerous high-profile crash reports, a new study from the IIHS shows.

“The big-picture message here is that the early adopters of these systems still have a poor understanding of the technology’s limits,” said IIHS President David Harkey.

“But we also see clear differences among the three owner populations. It’s possible that system design and marketing are adding to these misconceptions.”

If A Hurricane Hits, Would It Be Better to Have an EV Or a Gas Car?

For “getting out of Dodge” as the well-worn saying goes, an EV is likely to be a better bet. Even if you’re stuck in traffic on the way to the shelter, you won’t be much better off in a gas car. EVs don’t idle, so if you’re not moving, you’re not using energy, except to run the AC or heater.

EVs would seem to be the winner when evacuating in the path of a hurricane, but gas vehicles do have a slight advantage when returning to the disaster zone to offer assistance.

EVs Add to Electricity Demand, But Not as Much as You Might Think

In some wealthy countries, EVs are what’s keeping electricity demand from falling, while in emerging economies they make a modest addition to steady expected increases in overall electricity demand.

One way to think about this: In 2021, China generated 983 TWh of electricity from wind and solar, 25 times more than the global passenger EV fleet used. China added around 255 TWh of new wind and solar generation to its energy mix in 2021, meaning its newly installed renewable generation produced more than six times what the entire global passenger EV fleet — built up over many years — consumed.

Integrating EVs into the power system will still require careful planning, incentives for off-peak charging to reduce peak demand, and localized grid reinforcement in many places. As a share of global electricity demand, though, the contribution will still be very modest for quite a few years.

How Crash Detection Works: Apple Execs Explain Amid Rollercoaster Activations

Crash Detection is one of the headline new features on the iPhone 14 and the latest Apple Watch models. It’s designed to detect when someone has been in a car crash.

Apple said that high G-forces are the biggest clue to a user being in a car crash, and that would explain why it would also be activated on rollercoaster rides, in which relatively high G-forces can be briefly experienced. The company says that the whole area is a complex one, and there is “no silver bullet” in terms of a single, reliable indicator. Instead, the company combines a diverse range of signals to try to detect the crash.

The Future of Automotive Computing: Cloud and Edge

Four well-known technology trends have emerged as key drivers of innovation in the automotive industry: autonomous driving, connectivity, electrification, and shared mobility—such as car-sharing services. Collectively, these are referred to as the ACES trends, and they will have a significant impact on computing and mobile-network requirements.

With ACES functions, industry players now have three main choices for workload location: onboard the vehicle, cloud, and edge

Multiple factors may need to be considered for balancing workloads across onboard, edge, and cloud computing, but four may be particularly important. The first is safety, since workloads essential for passenger safety require extremely fast reaction times. Other considerations include latency, computing complexity, and requirements for data transfer, which depend on the type, volume, and heterogeneity of data.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Carlos Oropeza of Wheels Donlen shares his insights about celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month through an AFLA member’s perspective.

Growing up in the states, I had a little identity issue and struggled to find a sense of belonging.

As a child who migrated to the United States at a very young age, I felt that I wasn’t fully Hispanic since I was Americanized.

However, I also wasn’t fully an American because half of my traditions and experiences were from a different culture. Who I was culturally confused me. I loved taking part in all of the American holidays and traditions, but I also loved waking up in the morning to the sweet smells of a delicious Mexican breakfast and hearing the commotion as the family came together.

Keep in mind that the Hispanic family includes extended cousins and relatives. One thing I knew for sure was that our family was very close-knit. It was not until I was in my 20s that I took a sabbatical and decided to visit the land where my parents were from and where I was born.

Merchants Fleet

Fleet Management Weekly recently had the opportunity to speak with Brendan P. Keegan, Chairman, CEO & President of Merchants Fleet, to discuss the fleet management company’s exceptional growth, new ownership group, and plans for the future.

Our first question for Keegan was this: Merchants has been on quite a roll for a number of years, and now you have been acquired by Bain Capital. What does this mean for Merchants and what does it mean for your clients?

Keegan: Let’s start with where we’ve been already with Bain.

Bain came in two-and-a-half years ago as our growth capital partner. As we continued to grow, we really needed an external investor to strengthen our foundation.

Since the beginning of 2018, we’ve grown fivefold on our top line.

Fleet Marketing

By Ed Pierce, FMW Contributing Editor

Last month, I wrote about the trend in B2B sales of overcoming fewer face-to-face sales calls by using digital connectivity tools and media.

This situation has fostered an indirect B2B buying cycle that takes longer, complicates the journey, and involves multiple stakeholders.

Let’s continue looking at how smart suppliers are adapting their marketing and sales strategies to win business.

Forrester Research, in its “A Blueprint for Customer-Obsessed Enterprises,” identifies six phases of the B2B customer lifecycle.
