The unit volume for retail used vehicle sales was up mildly (0.7%) over year ago, but the prices in April were down quite a bit – 5.8%. The market saw $34.1B in sales revenue for the month versus $36.2B a year ago. Lower transaction prices was the cause – down 6.46% to $8,928 from $9,545 (excluding aftermarket, taxes, fees, etc.).

April Saw Rise in Sales Volume of 1-to-5 Year Old Cars As their Inventories Improved Slightly:
4 year old vehicles saw strongest number at 6.44% increase, followed by 3 year olds which were up 5.96%.
Saw 12% Increase in Number of Used-Vehicle Shoppers in April ’13 vs. April ’12:
Shoppers Up 8.83% for franchised, 6.54% for independents, and 21.98% for private party.
Shoppers Leaving DMA (Marketing Area) in Larger Numbers to Make UV Purchase:
Price and availability of a particular make and model were the 2 primary reasons.
