Fuel efficient pickup trucks are becoming attractive to shoppers, including Ford F-Series pickups with fuel efficient, EcoBoost powertrains. But what about a plug-in hybrid version of the F-150? Ford is testing it out through a partnership with Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies. Quantum recently delivered the first pilot version of its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle F-150 to Florida Power & Light Co., in association with Dow Kokam, the pickup’s lithium-ion battery system supplier. The pickup can go 35 miles on battery only and then switch to an efficient hybrid drive mode, giving it 100+ mpg, depending on the drive cycle and charging frequency.
