Traffic deaths were down slightly in 2006, but over half of those killed in vehicle accidents died unbuckled. The US Department of Transportation provides states with millions of dollars in highway safety funds annually including almost $27 million to support seatbelt enforcement. Estimates show highway crashes cost society $230.6 billion each year.
