Auto makers talk a lot about connecting drivers to social media or entertainment while they’re on the road. But what most drivers really want is an app that can warn them of a traffic jam ahead and advise them how to get around it.
Now, companies such as Clear Channel Communications Inc., Inrix Inc. and Triangle Software LLC are packaging the sort of detailed traffic data once reserved for broadcasters or commercial fleet operators in consumer-friendly smartphone apps. Some of the apps, including Triangle’s Beat the Traffic, are free for basic versions. Getting additional, more detailed data or alerts can cost extra.
