When the city of Detroit needed to reduce its fleet operating costs as part of its struggle to stay solvent, it saved $5 million early on by “rightsizing” the fleet — getting rid of both excess vehicles and excess vehicle capabilities.
The Motor City was hardly alone in trying to trim excess waste. A survey of members by the National Association of Fleet Administrators in 2011 found that 74% had “begun rightsizing whenever possible.”
