Crash-Free Culture

By Sarah Bechtold, eDriving

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, but for fleet managers, distraction isn’t confined to a calendar window. It’s a year-round challenge—and one of the most persistent contributors to crashes, near misses, and rising liability.

Despite hands-free laws, company policies, and widespread awareness, distraction remains stubbornly embedded in modern driving. The reason? Distraction is less about devices and more about human behavior.

Distraction often isn’t intentional—it’s habitual. Quick glances, multitasking under pressure, or overconfidence in one’s ability to “handle it” all play a role. Without addressing the psychology behind distraction, enforcement alone rarely changes behavior.

Mentor by eDriving helps fleets identify distraction trends through behavioral analysis. Rather than labeling drivers as “unsafe,” the platform enables constructive conversations grounded in data—creating opportunities for learning.

People. Connection. Promises.

By Steve Bender, CEO and Owner, Fleet Street Remarketing

When our marketing team sat down to discuss our 2026 campaign, it didn’t take long to focus on what we believe matters most in fleet: The importance of PEOPLE. The power of human CONNECTION. The imperative to keep our PROMISES.

In my opinion, it was a gutsy call—especially given the explosion of technology in fleet, a phenomenon that is no doubt helping usher in the next great age of the industry.

In a business where our customers are routinely recognized for their excellence, where my colleagues average nearly 20 years of experience, and where people rallied around my family during our darkest days, I’m certain focusing on PEOPLE, CONNECTIONS, and PROMISES is exactly right.

When you work with the right PEOPLE and trust in the power of human CONNECTION, it’s easy to keep your PROMISES.

Integrated Fleet Planning

By Cyndi Brandt, VP Fleet Solutions at Descartes

Over the past decade, fleets have invested heavily in routing platforms, telematics, dispatch systems and planning tools.

While each delivers value on its own, fleet operations can still struggle with inconsistent performance, rising costs and driver dissatisfaction. For example, a route that appears efficient in a planning system may require last-minute dispatch changes due to route constraints or driver availability, ultimately increasing miles, delaying deliveries and creating payroll discrepancies.

To overcome these challenges, leading fleets are shifting toward an integrated planning model—one that connects everything from long-term route design to driver pay in unified, continuous workflows.

By bringing fleet planning and execution into a single environment from route design through dispatch and into driver pay, fleets are better positioned to improve performance, control costs, and create a more consistent experience for drivers.

NHTSA Launches “Pathways to Safer Streets” Initiative

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has unveiled its new initiative, Pathways to Safer Streets (P2SS): A National Traffic Safety Action Plan, to reduce traffic fatalities.

NHTSA’s P2SS will implement eight strategies to target the leading causes of traffic fatalities: impairment, speeding, distraction, and lack of seat belt use.

“At NHTSA, we’re leaning in to support new and enhanced steps to target and reduce bad driving behaviors that lead to serious crashes like speeding and impaired, unbelted, and distracted driving,” said NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison.

High Gas Prices Are Boosting EV Sales Around The World. Will The U.S. Be Left Out?

The March sales numbers are in, and it’s becoming clear that higher gas prices are already changing the equation for EV shoppers around the globe. But the shift isn’t playing out in the same way everywhere.

“We see from basically every indicator we can find that people are more interested than ever in EVs,” Colin McKerracher, the head of clean transport at BloombergNEF said. “And in the places where that supply is available, primarily from the Chinese automakers, to meet that demand, sales are going through the roof.”

As EVs see strong growth around the world, the U.S. is behind and struggling to keep pace. At the end of the day, McKerracher said, “consumers can’t buy a car they can’t find.”

Fuel Prices Are So High That Thieves Are Now Making Holes in Your Gas Tank

Gas theft is back again, and it has gotten meaner. With gasoline prices at their highest in four years, thieves have moved on from siphoning off gas to making holes in fuel tanks on parked cars.

The method is simple and especially brutal in its aftereffects. A thief needs only an electric drill or a punch in both plastic or metal gas tanks, a few minutes, and something to catch the fuel.

The driver, meanwhile, is left with a ruined tank and a repair bill that can run up to $3,000 for a replacement gas tank, if they’re not jerry-rigging a sealant-fix together.

Social Inflation and Fleet Insurance

By Alain Samaha, President, Teletrac Navman

Social inflation isn’t a new term to the insurance industry, but it’s becoming an urgent one for U.S. fleet operators. Unlike general economic inflation, social inflation is driven by legal and societal forces.

What fleet operators can control is their own risk profile. Video evidence reduces incorrect fault assignment. It shortens claims resolution timelines.

With nuclear verdicts at record levels, litigation funding institutionalized, and commercial auto remaining unprofitable for carriers, fleet operators face a straightforward question: what’s the cost of not having video evidence when the next claim lands?

Fleet Concierge

By Eric Anderson, Union Leasing Vice President of Customer Service and Strategic Services & Dale Jewell, Union Leasing Senior Manager, Fleet Maintenance

Fleet today has evolved. Between shifting market dynamics, supply constraints, and external influences, there’s a lot happening at once.

A concierge mindset means staying tuned into what’s happening around your fleet, not just within it.

In addition to seasonal trends, geopolitical developments in the Middle East are adding to the uncertainty. The question, of course, is how does a rapidly evolving fuel supply and cost impact your fleet?

Fleet Marketing: A Call to Action

By Ed Pierce, Fleet Brand Acceleration

Customer Experience (CX) doesn’t just support marketing performance; it defines it. When CX aligns with brand promises, marketing accelerates growth. When it breaks down, it quietly undermines everything marketing works to build.

Despite its importance, CX often fragments across organizations. Marketing, sales, operations, and customer success use different systems, metrics, and priorities. This fragmentation creates gaps that customers feel immediately.

To fully leverage CX as a driver of marketing success, fleet organizations must break down silos and align functions around a shared customer journey.
