Summer is the highest season for vehicle theft, and thieves steal more than vehicles, radios, and wheel covers. Some of the most popular items stolen from vehicles include air bags, GPS units, cell phones, iPads, laptops, and purses.

Total Cost of Ownership

By Ian Gardner, founder, EVAI

A perfect storm of rising expenditures underscores an undeniable truth: accurate Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculation is no longer merely a best practice but a critical imperative for survival and strategic growth.

In this volatile environment, the conventional approaches to TCO are proving woefully inadequate, leaving many fleets vulnerable to significant financial pitfalls.

The future, and indeed the present, demands a true shift toward advanced AI-powered TCO technology platforms that leverage predictive modelling.

The lack of OEM data agnosticism in many existing TCO platforms presents an even more nuanced problem, particularly concerning vehicle acquisition and insurance costs.

Connected Vehicles

By Brad Gintz, co-founder and CEO, EZ LYNK

In the world of fleet operations, the question isn’t whether downtime will happen—it’s when and what kind of impact it will have when it does.

Imagine that vehicles could tell you what’s wrong before they experience a problem. Predictive intelligence—including early detection, remote troubleshooting, and operational efficiency—makes this possible.

Predictive intelligence doesn’t just solve problems—it prevents them. For modern fleets, integrating real-time data and predictive diagnostics creates a ripple effect that enhances operational stability and efficiency at every level.

Fleets that embrace connected diagnostics today are setting the stage for more scalable, efficient operations tomorrow. Predictive intelligence isn’t just a tech trend—it’s a strategic shift.

Record 72.2 Million Americans Expected to Travel Domestically July 4th Week

This year’s domestic travel forecast is an increase of 1.7 million travelers compared to last year and 7 million more than in 2019. AAA’s Independence Day forecast includes two weekends instead of one to better reflect the flow of holiday travelers.

AAA projects 61.6 million people will travel by car, a 2.2% increase over last year, and the highest volume on record.

The number of people traveling by air is also projected to set a new record. AAA expects 5.84 million travelers will fly to their destinations; that’s 8% of all Independence Day travelers. This year’s projection is a 1.4% increase over the previous record set last Independence Day week of 5.76 million air travelers.

Those Pesky Blind Spots Keep Getting Larger, Says IIHS

It helps to see where you’re going when you’re driving down the road, and yet according to a recent study by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe Center, this basic prerequisite has become far more difficult in modern vehicles.

The study used IIHS’s new methods to identify blind spots and measure forward visibility up to 32.8 feet (10 meters) away. That may not seem like much, but if you’re making a turn at 10 mph, you can easily stop for a pedestrian or bicycle 32.8 feet away, as long as you can see it first.

The results show a disturbing trend of consistently worse visibility in all newer models, especially SUVs, which have also become much more popular in recent years.

Plug-In Hybrids Now Have More Problems Than EVs Do: J.D. Power

J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study now ranks PHEVs below electric vehicles for the first time ever in terms of problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100—the firm’s benchmark for how many issues a car will have in the first 90 days of ownership.

Both gasoline cars and normal hybrids rank better than EVs and PHEVs, the study said, at 184 PP100 and 196 PP100, respectively.

Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power said, “when comparing PHEVs to BEV or ICE models, they are getting impacted with issues from both the combustion engine (shifting, hesitation, etc.) as well as the electric engines (range, charging issues, etc.).”

One Unexpected Automaker Dominated 2025 IIHS Safety Rankings

Hyundai Motor Group earned 15 IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ (TSP and TSP+) awards.  It’s the group’s second consecutive year winning this award. Hyundai Motor Group comprises the Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis brands.

The Genesis G90 took home a TSP award, and the list of TSP+ winners including electric models like the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, mainstays of the brand like the Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe SUVs, and sedans like the Elantra and Sonata.

Earning a TSP or TSP+ rating isn’t easy and hasn’t gotten easier for 2025. In fact, the organization added stricter requirements for second-row occupants just this year, updating the moderate overlap front test.

The Meaning of ‘Glocal’

By Suresh Rajapakse, Chief Client Officer at Wheels and Gavin Eagle, Global Director, International at Ayvens

Managing a global fleet has shifted from being a niche strategy to a critical capability. One of the biggest decisions fleet leaders face is whether to stick with a standardized global model or take a more flexible “glocal” approach – global, but with local considerations built into the plan.

There is no universally superior model that can be applied to all international organizations. It all comes down to what aligns with your company’s operating model, culture, mission, and regional complexity.

Both Wheels and Ayvens have expansive international capabilities. Together, we offer the flexibility and scale to support whatever fleet model works best for your business.

Fleet Street Remarketing

Rick Morgenweck wasn’t looking for a new full-time gig – not by a long shot. Afterall, he had been a senior executive and co-owner of a medical device company that had sold to Private Equity for a pretty penny in 2021, affording him the opportunity to ponder his next step.

Then Morgenweck met Steve Bender, owner of Fleet Street Remarketing. The two struck up a fast friendship, collaborating on several Fleet Street initiatives. Bender also asked Morgenweck to help him draw up the job requirements for a new CEO at Fleet Street.

Bender recalls, “We found a few good candidates, even went through the interview process with a couple of them, but then I realized that I had already been working with the perfect person for the role.” That’s when he asked Morgenweck to take on Fleet Street’s CEO role.
