Transforming ‘How Things Have Always Been Done’

In Fleet Vehicle Remarketing That’s as Easy as 1-2-3, FLD executive Richard Mallek answers the question, “What if there’s a better way to sell used assets? One where sellers had absolutely zero risk and transactions took about a week?

This week, Ed Pierce writes a fascinating column, the latest in our Fleetology series, about the revolution in fleet asset management fueled by AI and the rise of Mobility as a Service (MaaS).

Ed says, “The numbers speak volumes. We’re talking about companies using AI-powered fleet management experiencing, in some instances, up to an 89% drop in accidents and a 92% decrease in risky driving behaviors.” But AI goes beyond safety!

NHTSA: Prevent Hot Car Heatstroke in Children NHTSA: Prevent Hot Car Heatstroke in Children

From NHTSA

More than 1,010 children have died of heatstroke, because they were left or became trapped in a hot car over the past 25 years. It’s important for everyone to understand these tragedies can happen to anyone — but are always preventable.

Never leave a child in a vehicle unattended for any length of time. Rolling windows down or parking in the shade does little to change the interior temperature of the vehicle.

Act Fast. Save a Life. If you see a child alone in a locked car, act immediately and call 911. A child in distress due to heat should be removed from the vehicle as quickly as possible and rapidly cooled.

Fleet Asset Management

By Ed Pierce, Editor, Fleet Management Weekly & FleetWiki

It’s truly something to see – the way fleet asset management is changing. We’re talking about a genuine revolution, driven by digital technologies, that is shaking up how things have always been done.

Traditionally, keeping track of vehicles, managing their lifespans, scheduling maintenance, and ensuring compliance have been the core of asset management.

However, these days, fleet managers are increasingly turning to advanced technology solutions that promise better efficiency, a greener footprint, and cost savings.

As these technologies become more reliable and start to overlap, a comprehensive digital overhaul will translate to a decisive advantage. I’m referring to enhanced asset utilization, lower costs, and improved service.

Easy Remarketing

By Richard Mallek, Director of Business Development, FLD Remarketing

Remarketing assets is not always the easiest process, often draining valuable time, money, and resources. This is a tough proposition at a time when everything about fleet seems hard enough as it is.

But what if there was a better way to sell used assets? One where sellers had absolutely zero risk and transactions were fast and easy and could be accomplished in three simple steps.

Well – at FLD – that’s exactly what we do. Instead of forcing sellers to accept a cut of whatever they sell their asset for at auction, we give customers an upfront offer on any used asset and then pay them the full price they agree to in a couple of hours.

California Will Sue Trump Administration If ICE Car Ban Is Repealed

The U.S. Senate voted last week to repeal a waiver that allowed California to enforce a ban on the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by the 2035 calendar year.

The 51-44 vote passed largely along party lines and was supported by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a lobbying group that includes General Motors, Ford, Stellantis, Volkswagen, Toyota, Hyundai, and several other major auto manufacturers.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta promises to sue the Trump administration over the repeal if and when the president greenlights last week’s vote in the Senate, according to Politico. “The federal government’s overreach is illogical,” Bonta said. “It’s politically motivated, and it comes at the expense of Californians’ lives and livelihoods.”

New York Won’t Shut Down Congestion Pricing Without Court Order Despite Threats To Defund City

The third deadline from the Trump administration to shut down New York City’s congestion pricing zone passed, and Governor Kathy Hochul didn’t blink.

The threats from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy have been empty so far. However, federal officials are still trumpeting a doomsday scenario where all the funding from Washington to the Big Apple is cut off.

The White House has been less than pleased with the performance of its lawyers when three Assistant U.S. Attorneys accidentally released an 11-page document outlining their doubts that federal courts would agree with Duffy’s view on the congestion zone’s legality.

Nissan’s Plan to Avoid Tariffs? Take Over a Ford Plant

Though not fully implemented, the specter of tariffs looms large over the auto industry. After decades of building global supply chains and leaning into overseas manufacturing, automakers are growing concerned that tariffs will hit hard and fast.

Like many, Nissan is looking to stateside production and procurement to avoid tariffs (should they arrive) and is now partnering with Ford to help in one critical way.

The Wall Street Journal reports that a Ford plant in Kentucky will now be used by Nissan to manufacture batteries for its EVs.

BYD Starts a New EV Price War in China

BYD has triggered another EV price war in China by slashing the price of several models, sending the stocks of local EV automakers sinking.

China is the largest auto market in the world. It is also the largest and most competitive electric vehicle market since Chinese electric automakers are not allowed to compete in many other markets.

This is going to shake up an already rapidly evolving market. BYD’s gross profit nearly tripled from 2019 to 2024. It looks like it now feels comfortable putting more pressure on competitors who have not all achieved profitability. It’s similar to what Tesla has done in other markets before.

Tariff Tracker

Curated by Ed Pierce, Fleet Management Weekly

Since Fleet Management Weekly’s April 23rd Tariff Tracker article, the U.S. automotive and fleet sectors have seen several significant tariff updates, policy adjustments, and new industry responses.

On April 29, 2025, the U.S. President signed a Proclamation and Executive Order introducing “import adjustment offsets” for auto parts used in vehicles assembled in the U.S., providing partial relief from the 25% tariffs on imported auto parts and vehicles.

Many OEMs and fleet managers accelerated imports before the April 3 deadline, resulting in a temporary inventory spike, which is now being followed by shortages.
