Connected Vehicles

By Sumit Chauhan, Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, CerebrumX

As cars generate significantly more data every day, and with the advent of high-speed 5G communication, in-vehicle edge computing has become critical to ensure that connected vehicles function at scale to provide quicker and improved performance.

With each additional connection, embedded or telematics system, and data-collecting sensor, protecting vehicles from cyber threats becomes increasingly challenging.

The potential of smart vehicles can only be fully realized once the security of connected vehicles and the corresponding data has been effectively addressed.

California Police Department Dumping Its Gas Cruisers for Modded Teslas

The South Pasadena Police Department is now replacing its entire fleet of internal combustion police cars with ten Tesla Model 3 sedans and 10 Model Y SUVs, outfitted for special police work by the Tesla race car modifier Unplugged Performance.

“Tesla’s stunning track record of reliability, low maintenance costs, and impressive on-road performance and driving dynamics make EV transition a safe choice for many departments. The cost savings are undeniable and being able to bring Tesla’s entire suite of crash and safety systems to bear on officer safety is an added benefit above and beyond the economics of operating and maintaining this modern EV fleet,” said Sergeant Tony Abdalla.

High Gas Prices Helped Along by High Heat Records

July was the hottest month in all of recorded human history. The heat wave is only partly responsible for the high gas prices. Price spikes were due to three main factors: heat-related refinery outages, strong summer demand for gasoline, and gasoline inventories that were at their lowest July level since 2015.

Strong demand and low inventories are classic high-gas-price triggers, but heat-related outages are less common. AAA, which tracks gas prices, said the extreme heat we’re all experiencing this summer meant some U.S. refineries, especially those near the Gulf of Mexico, had to cut back. Due to the high heat, the U.S. refined around 500,000 fewer barrels a day than usual.

Monthly Fees Inside Cars? Here Come the Hackers

Many automakers are exploring a new business model that would see them charge fees to access features inside a car. If automakers can switch features on and off remotely and even lock performance behind software gates, then they can charge for them.

“We own the car. And, we don’t want to pay these $300 for the rear heated seats.” That’s how Christian Werling, a student at Technische Universität Berlin, explains his decision to hack into the operating system powering a Tesla. Werling and his team of three students changed the supply voltage that powers the AMD processor running the car’s infotainment system and were able to get paid upgrades for free on an unspecified Tesla model.

Electrify America Switches to Station-Specific Pricing, Reintroduces Idle Fees

Electrify America is changing things up yet again after raising its charging rates earlier this year. Instead of pricing set the same nationwide, EA is going to transition to station-specific prices.

EA will also start charging idle fees again to folks who sit at charging stations after their vehicle has already reached 100%. Both of these changes are slated to take effect on August 17 this year, so we’ll be able to see the results almost immediately. Electrify America didn’t detail or provide a range of prices.

The Recovery Continues

By Bill Bishop, SVP of Sales and Marketing, FLD Remarketing

As any fleet professional can tell you, the last three years have been the exact opposite of the three years before Covid, presenting a cascading cadre of challenges that continue to negatively affect the space to this day.

At the midway point in the year, we do see strength in several key indicators, including the Consumer Price Index and the overall economy in general.

Fleet is likely to experience another 3-4 months of status quo, free of any wild swings either up or down. The good news is that it would appear as we transition to Q3 that vehicle availability is headed in the right direction.
