The Obama administration has finalized the landmark 2017-25 fuel economy rules that will nearly double the efficiency of the nation’s cars and trucks over the next 13 years to a fleetwide average of 54.5 miles per gallon. In total, drivers will save $1.7 trillion at the pump, including the 2012-16 mileage increases that were finalized in 2010. That’s far more than the costs of more expensive autos. Society will see net benefits of $252 billion to $358 billion.
“These fuel standards represent the single most important step we’ve ever taken to reduce our dependence on foreign oil,” the President declared in a statement accompany the release of the new mileage regulations.
