For this round of Fleet Pro Focus, we chat with one of the most well-rounded folks in the biz – Frank Memolo, Senior Manager of North American Fleet at Teva Pharmaceuticals. He’s that rare breed of fleet professional who’s worked in senior positions in both the service sector and as a fleet manager. Frank knows fleet. He’s also one of the most affable pros you’ll ever meet and is a man of few, yet specific, words when it comes to the industry.
Here’s what he had to tell us:
What do you think are the 1-2 most important/pressing issues facing fleet today?
One, vehicle availability [and] allocation. Two, as always, rising costs.
How would you describe your fleet management style?
Customer-centric and nurturing. The last thing I want to have happen is to have an employee of our company to be unable to do their job because of something that happened with the fleet department.
Who had the biggest influence on your fleet career?
This is a tough one as I’ve known so many great people in fleet, all of whom I learned something from. But I’d have to say the biggest influence would be Jim Frank at Wheels. He helped me see early in my career how fleet is part of a larger ecosystem that’s impacted by so many outside factors.
Do you have a personal motto or creed that you live by?
I always liked “Nothing changes if nothing changes,” but before I even get to that it starts with “Live, Laugh, and Love.”
How do you see the industry 5 years from now?
As technology evolves, so will the fleet industry. I see the industry running cleaner and safer vehicles. Data and AI will reshape how fleets are managed and it wouldn’t surprise me to see each vehicle managed individually based on data pulled from the vehicle.
Tell us what you love about fleet and what people should know about the industry.
I can’t speak about other industries, but I have to say those of us in the fleet industry: regardless of whether you’re managing a fleet or a vendor providing a service, [Fleet people] are a great group of individuals always willing to help and share information. As much as we are a close-knit group, anyone new to fleet is always made to feel welcome. Most importantly we’re not just peers, we’re good friends.
Tell us a little bit about your life outside of fleet.
As everyone who knows me knows, I’m a lifelong and long suffering fan and season ticket holder of the NY Jets. My Facebook profile picture is a shot of me with [football legend] Joe Namath – my wife protested but I told her I knew him longer! Automotive Fleet once ran an article on who was a bigger Jet fan, me or Steve Levine who was at Pfizer at the time.
In my personal time I am an active member of the Knights of Columbus and serve in several leadership roles locally within the order.
