Hooksett, N.H. June 5, 2019: Merchants Automotive Group regretfully announces the passing of co-founder Bernice Siegel Singer. She was 94.
Singer and her husband, the late Irving Singer, founded Merchants Automotive Group in 1962 when they opened “Merchants Motors,” a used automotive dealership, in Manchester, New Hampshire. Building on the company’s success, they opened a fleet leasing business five years later, which has grown into Merchants Fleet, the eighth largest fleet management company nationally. The automotive dealership continues to do business as Merchants Auto in its Hooksett Road location, and it is the largest pre-owned dealer in the state.
In addition to her professional legacy, Singer was an active philanthropist who gave back to Hadassah, Temple Israel Sisterhood, The Webster House, The American Cancer Society, and The American Red Cross. Her efforts earned her multiple awards, including Person of the Year by The Caregivers, the Hadassah Medical Center, and The American Cancer Society.
In speaking with the family, they said their mother’s dedication to her community and strong character will always be a core part of what guides Merchants Automotive Group. Her philanthropic spirit still guides them today, and her life was a source of inspiration for many.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mrs. Singer’s memory to the Singer Family Fund at Temple Israel, 66 Salmon Street, in Manchester, New Hampshire.
