Self-driving car companies usually have a human driver along for the ride in the event that a car fails to function properly.
Waymo will be demonstrating confidence in its autonomous technology by having an employee ride in the back with customers, instead of behind the wheel.
“Because we see so much potential in shared mobility, the first way people will get to experience Waymo’s fully self-driving technology will be as a driverless service,” Waymo’s chief executive John Krafcik told an audience at Web Summit, a technology conference being held in Lisbon this week.
