Rob Minton, President, RevvedUP Strategies: How Data, Relationships, and Strategy Are Reshaping the Fleet Industry

Rob Minton, President, RevvedUP Strategies: How Data, Relationships, and Strategy Are Reshaping the Fleet Industry

Editor’s note: RevvedUP Strategies is a consulting firm that helps emerging and growth-stage companies enter and scale in the fleet, connected vehicle, and telematics markets. The firm works with startups and established solution providers to refine go-to-market strategy, identify ideal customer profiles, and build the relationships needed to gain traction with OEMs, fleet operators, and industry partners.

The company is led by Rob Minton, a 26-year automotive, fleet, and telematics veteran who most recently retired from Geotab and previously held leadership roles at General Motors, including Cadillac and GM’s fleet and commercial organization. We spoke with Minton about how fleet technology has evolved, the growing role of artificial intelligence, and how RevvedUP Strategies helps companies break into one of the industry’s most relationship-driven markets.

You’ve spent more than 20 years in the fleet industry and the last decade in telematics and data. What is the biggest change you’ve witnessed?
Rob Minton, President, RevvedUP Strategies: How Data, Relationships, and Strategy Are Reshaping the Fleet IndustryWithout a doubt, vehicle technology has changed dramatically. Safety systems, infotainment, sensors, and advanced driver assistance features are now essential to fleets. Capabilities such as automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and collision avoidance are now table stakes in many vehicle purchase decisions.

But the most revolutionary change has been the role data now plays in fleet operations. Years ago, a fleet might choose one vehicle over another simply because anti-lock brakes were standard. Today, fleets make purchase decisions based on whether they can access and leverage vehicle data.

If a business can’t obtain the data it needs from a particular OEM or platform, it often chooses another that can provide that access. Data has moved from a “nice to have” to a foundational requirement for running a fleet effectively.

Artificial Intelligence is becoming more prevalent in everyday life. How will AI impact fleet managers and how they do their jobs?

We’re moving toward what I call the “democratization of artificial intelligence.” Fleet managers shouldn’t need to be data scientists to use AI. As more telematics platforms embed AI, users will be able to ask plain-language questions and receive immediate, actionable answers.

For example, instead of pulling reports, applying filters, exporting to spreadsheets, and manipulating data, a fleet manager will simply ask, “How many miles did each of my vehicles drive by location in 2025?” and receive an answer in seconds. If they want to compare it to 2024, they can ask a follow-up question.

AI eliminates all the manual steps in between. That speed and accessibility will fundamentally change how fleet managers interact with data and make decisions.

You weren’t always in the fleet industry. Tell us about the journey that led you here.
Rob Minton, President, RevvedUP Strategies: How Data, Relationships, and Strategy Are Reshaping the Fleet IndustryThe first 20 years of my career were spent in marketing and communications. I was working in the healthcare industry when General Motors recruited me around 2000. They were looking for someone who could help communicate to employees how rising healthcare costs were affecting the competitiveness of the American auto industry.

I’ve always loved cars—thanks largely to my dad—so the opportunity to work at GM was very appealing. I made a deal with them: I would take on the healthcare communications role, but I wanted to move to the product side of the business at some point.

They kept that promise. After a few years, I moved to Cadillac and later to GM’s fleet and commercial division. That’s where my fleet career truly began, and I’ve loved every minute of it since.

Although you’re “retired,” you’re clearly still active. What are your plans?
I retired from Geotab on December 31, but I couldn’t imagine going from 100 miles an hour to zero. Staying active is important to me, both mentally and physically.

That’s why I created RevvedUP Strategies. It allows me to apply my 26 years of automotive, fleet, and telematics experience to help companies that want to grow in the fleet and connected vehicle space. I get to stay engaged, leverage my network, and work with organizations doing interesting things.

I’m only a little over a month in, and I’m already busier than I expected—in a good way. As long as I don’t accidentally turn this into another full-time job, it’s the perfect balance.

There are other consultants in the market. Why should a company choose RevvedUP Strategies?
The fleet industry is built on relationships. I’ve spent decades cultivating strong relationships across OEMs, suppliers, technology providers, and fleet operators.

Rob Minton, President, RevvedUP Strategies: How Data, Relationships, and Strategy Are Reshaping the Fleet IndustryMany early-stage or startup companies have a solid product but lack access to decision-makers. They don’t know who to contact, how to secure introductions, or how to position themselves effectively.

That’s where I help. I can open doors, make introductions, and serve as a trusted connector. Cold calling works sometimes, but a warm introduction from someone who knows the industry makes a huge difference.

What challenges do companies trying to break into the fleet and connected vehicle space typically face?
Most have a commercialized product, but they don’t yet have clear visibility into who will buy it or how to reach those buyers. They struggle to identify ideal customer profiles, navigate complex buying cycles, and understand how fleets evaluate new technology.

I help them sharpen their value proposition, identify target segments, and connect with the right people. In many cases, that combination of strategy and access significantly accelerates their progress.

What excites you most about where the fleet industry is heading?
Data and AI are unlocking entirely new possibilities. Fleets are becoming smarter, more predictive, and more proactive. At the same time, vehicles are becoming more connected and digitally native.

When you combine better vehicle technology, better data, and easier access to insights, fleets are positioned to operate more safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively than ever.

It’s an exciting time to be in this industry, and I’m grateful to still be part of it.
