OWL Services: Solutions for Fleets Transitioning to Clean Energy or Traditional Fuel Needs

The shift away from fossil fuels has led to a broad range of clean energy solutions, from CNG to propane to electric energy. These myriad energy solutions make it easier to reduce carbon footprints and meet sustainability goals, but they can make it more difficult for fleets to fuel up cheaply and reliably. New companies are beginning to emerge to handle the evolving fueling needs of fleets no matter where they are in the shift toward clean energy.

One such company is OWL Services, an integrated service company dedicated to providing fueling solutions to fleets on the go. The company works with fleets to perform tasks such as:

  • Building and maintaining EV charging stations
  • Building and servicing facilities for petroleum businesses
  • Fuel monitoring and compliance services
  • Installation of point-of-sale, security, and surveillance systems
  • Ordering and installing petroleum and charging parts and equipment
  • Managed services for fleet and retail operations

With over 30 offices nationwide and over 1,500 field service professionals, OWL Services is helping fleets manage their fueling needs while complying with environmental standards and sustainability goals. To learn more about OWL and how the company works with fleets, we spoke with Allen Goetz, Director of Fleet Sales with OWL Services:

What is OWL Services? What does your company do with fleets?
OWL Services is a roughly 3000-person organization that’s based out of Texas with the opening of their new Technical Operations and Training Center in Irving. It started when some venture capitalists joined and invested in an organization called Oscar W. Larson in the petroleum equipment space. Fast forward about three years or so and they have acquired about 12 more operating companies, each of which touches fueling operations in some way, whether it’s fleet, C-store, eMobility, or anywhere in between.

As an organization, we’ve grown into a large nationwide provider of solutions in the fleet space. That includes building new fleet fueling depots, servicing existing ones, providing environmental compliance, or even helping people close down fleet fueling facilities and pull tanks out of the ground. We do all of those things and anywhere in between. We work with all kinds of fuel, whether it’s gasoline, diesel, or electrons.

What are some of the things that OWL Services has done recently with fleets?
OWL Services works with a wide variety of fleets ranging from the sort of white service vehicle fleets you might see in a government organization to class eight 18-wheelers and anywhere in between. We work with some of the nation’s largest refuse-handling companies, LTL Freight companies, trucking companies, HVAC contractors, and municipal governments.

Each one of those verticals can require a bit of specialization to cover exactly what they’re looking for. Some may be just gasoline; others might be gas or diesel. Some might even be gas, diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), propane, and electric. We offer a comprehensive range of services including equipment sales, installation, break repair, and maintenance. We even offer preventative maintenance and software solutions that support environmental compliance for fleets managing their own fueling operations.

Can you tell us a success story?
We recently worked with a large nationwide trucking company that was trying to solve the issue of finding and attaining diesel exhaust fluid at their fuel islands. Historically, they had been using small jug totes, which had graduated up to 50-gallon totes. Now they were interested in making a move nationwide with Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) dispensers and handling equipment with cold weather capabilities.

This organization was quite large, with 17 terminals throughout the United States. We visited each terminal, assessed what was available at each site, and worked with each terminal manager to design and appropriate a space where we could put a DEF tank without interfering in their operations. We rolled out that program with them nationwide so they could have DEF at the fuel island while being able to track those transactions the same way they do for diesel fuel.

What is OWL Services doing in the e-mobility space?
OWL Services is a full-blown EPC in e-mobility, which means we handle the functions of engineering, procurement, and construction. We do this for big network operators like Ionna and EVGo. We are also technology agnostic, as we work with probably the top 10 providers of charging equipment, as well as the top 10 charge management software solutions.

When a fleet is looking for someone to come out and twist the wire nuts and turn the wrenches in their EV project, we are that company. We’ll not only get the job done on the front end with utility coordination and permitting straight through construction but also preventative maintenance and break fixing in the e-mobility space. So, uptime and e-mobility are very big commitments to OWL Services, and we’re a very large player in that space nationwide.
