NHTSA will require automakers and motorcycle manufacturers to provide owners a free, online way to search for recall information by punching in their vehicle identification numbers.GM, Ford and Chrysler and others already offer such a service. By linking to those and other databases maintained by the manufacturers themselves, however, regulators agreed that a separate government-run database on recalls wouldn’t be created as well.
