Benchmarking

By Erin Gilchrist, Vice President of Fleet Evangelism, IntelliShift

Mid-sized fleets face a unique challenge—balancing efficiency with rising operational costs and increasing compliance demands.

Unlike major enterprise fleets with access to expansive industry insights, mid-sized fleets often operate with limited visibility, making it harder to control costs, optimize vehicle use, and ensure driver safety.

One powerful tool that can level the playing field is benchmarking. By leveraging data from telematics and industry reports, fleet managers can assess their performance against similar operations, uncover inefficiencies, and implement strategies to enhance productivity and profitability.

For mid-sized fleets looking to thrive in an increasingly data-driven world, adopting benchmarking today isn’t just about solving current challenges—it’s about securing a strong foundation for long-term success.

WTW 2025

(Work Truck Week Photo provided by NTEA)

By Tod Trousdell, Partner, RobertsTrousdell Marketing and Communications

If you ask exhibitors and attendees at this year’s Work Truck Week how they felt about the 2025 version of what’s become the commercial vehicle industry’s most important conference, you would hear this: Consistent. Productive. Affirming.

For fleet managers, WTW is prized as a condensed opportunity to meet every vendor, partner, customer and interested party in their universe, a benefit mentioned by virtually every fleet manager I spoke with.

“WTW…sets the standard when it comes to doing great business,” said Bill Bishop, SVP of Sales and Marketing for asset remarketer FLD. He added, “It’s also the place where important trends are identified and ideas take shape; we exchange a lot of great information here.”

“We couldn’t have asked for a better week,” Steve Carey, NTEA President beamed. “People were obviously excited to be at the event and are already actively looking forward to next year.”

Fraud Prevention

By Brad Parker, Co-Founder and CEO, DealNow.com

The fleet industry has long been plagued by the persistent issue of fraud, especially with used vehicle transactions. For years, fleet operators and their financing partners have been hesitant to offload aging inventory directly to private buyers in the private marketplace.

This reluctance stemmed from the lack of access to robust identity verification and fraud prevention tools, which left fleets and lenders vulnerable and exposed to fraudulent transactions.

However, the landscape is changing, thanks to the advent of new data technology platforms that offer comprehensive solutions to these long-standing issues.

When fleet operators leverage advanced security measures such as driver’s license verification, facial recognition, and mobile phone record checks, these platforms offer a comprehensive solution that prioritizes safety, efficiency, and transparency.

USPS EV Contract Becomes Target of DOGE Caucus

In 2022 the USPS issued an estimate of just how its fleet electrification efforts would unfold throughout the decade, indicating that some 45,000 of its 60,000 NGDVs would be ordered as electric models

US Senate DOGE Caucus Chair Joni Ernst (R-IA) and DOGE Subcommittee Congressman Michael Cloud (R-TX) have introduced a bill, dubbed the Return to Sender Act, that proposes to terminate the $3 billion that had been allotted under the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act to electrify a part of the USPS fleet, citing delays and other issues in the program.

A large chunk of that investment would have also included thousands of EV chargers sourced from ChargePoint, Siemens, and Blink.

EPA Administrator Going to War Against Emissions Requirements

Incoming EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin issued a press release this week announcing the long list of environmental regulations he’s seeking to eliminate. Among them are automotive emissions rules issued throughout the Biden administration.

“Today is the greatest day of deregulation our nation has seen. We are driving a dagger straight into the heart of the climate change religion to drive down cost of living for American families, unleash American energy, bring auto jobs back to the US and more.”

The light-duty rules in Zeldin’s crosshairs set emissions standards for most everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs starting with model year 2027 through to 2032.

EV Carpool Lane Perk Set to End in State with the Most Electric Cars

A federal law giving California electric vehicles (EVs) the right to use HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes without passengers is set to expire on September 30th.

Greg Wallis, a California State Representative wrote a bill proposing a January 1st, 2027, extension of the law’s deadline, but D.C. remains stagnant. California has the highest number of EV registrations, at 1.25 million, which is around 35% of all the US registered EVs.

Wallis added that “This extension will give us the opportunity to balance ZEV adoption with lane degradation. If access to HOV lanes is one of the most important incentives for ZEV adoption, we shouldn’t risk an abrupt end of this program.”

Safety

(Article and graphics from IIHS)

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is requiring better protection for second-row occupants for the 2025 TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards, encouraging automakers to make advanced seat belt technology and other safety innovations the norm in the back seat.

As a result, only 48 models qualify for 2025 awards so far, compared with 71 last year at this time. Of this year’s winners, 36 earn TOP SAFETY PICK+ and 12 earn TOP SAFETY PICK.

“We’re once again challenging automakers to make their new models even safer than those they were building a year ago,” IIHS President David Harkey said. “Every vehicle that earns a 2025 award offers a high level of safety in both the front seat and the second row.”

Fleet Marketing

By Ed Pierce, Fleet Management Weekly’s Brand Acceleration

Branding and marketing are essential elements of a successful fleet supplier’s growth strategy. However, they are often misunderstood and confused. While they share similarities, branding and marketing are distinct concepts with different objectives.

Any fleet supplier can achieve its growth goals by understanding these differences and exploring the potential synergies through the right combination of both.

Branding involves creating a unique identity for your business and its products or services. Contrarily, marketing promotes a brand and its products to a specific user base, such as prospects and customers, to meet its growth goals.
