The Joint Office reports that there are now more than 183,000 Level 2 and DC fast charging ports across the US – that’s an increase of more than 13,000 public EV charging ports in the last quarter. (If we only count DC fast chargers, there are 43,152 charging ports and 10,662 locations.)
Thirty-six states have released at least their first round of National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) solicitations. Of these states, 23 have issued conditional awards or established agreements for more than 550 charging station locations, each with at least four fast charging ports. And four states – Maine, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Ohio – are already in Round 2 of releasing conditional awards.

Volkswagen will develop low-cost electric vehicles in a bid to better compete with fierce Chinese rivals, Europe’s largest carmaker said on Tuesday, after talks with Renault to team up on the project collapsed earlier this month.
The target is to produce electric vehicles for the European market priced at around 20,000 euros ($21,746), Volkswagen said, adding that a world premiere was planned for 2027.
“It’s about entry-level electric mobility from Europe for Europe,” Volkswagen Chief Executive Oliver Blume said in a statement. “In doing so, we combine a clear commitment to Europe as an industrial location, a European industrial policy and ultimately act in the interests of European customers.”

Pedestrian deaths in the United States have climbed dramatically over the past five years. A recent study in the UK showed that hybrids and EVs are twice as likely to strike pedestrians than vehicles with combustion engines and up to three times more likely to do so in urban areas.
They are quieter than gas cars, making it more difficult to hear one approaching, despite being required to generate a sound at lower speeds. They also tend to be driven by younger drivers with less experience. While this study took place in the UK, a 2017 study from the U.S. Department of Transportation showed that EVs and hybrids present a 20 percent than internal combustion-powered cars, a risk that rises to 50 percent during low-speed maneuvers.

According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), a New York study found fewer car-cyclist conflicts occurred at protected intersections compared to those with a dedicated turning lane and specific bike signals.
The Dutch-style junction isn’t a European exclusive. Some U.S cities have already given the unconventional layout a try, and the hits don’t lie because there are fewer of them. At a protected junction, the islands force cars to go around the new safety zone. Although the primary focus is to offset bicycle traffic from vehicle traffic, the separated berth provides additional protection and safety for pedestrians, strollers, wheelchairs, etc.

Cost-conscious parents looking to provide a safe vehicle for their teen driver seem to be in luck right now, at least according to an updated list compiled by IIHS and Consumer Reports.
Not only is the selection robust, but all those vehicles on the list meet or exceed the stringent IIHS driver-side small overlap testing standards. They also scored highly on a number of other key safety criteria, including ADAS.
“It’s exciting to see crash avoidance tech like automatic emergency braking filtering through the fleet and into affordable used models, including many priced under $15,000,” said IIHS Research Scientist Rebecca Weast. “With a little knowledge and patience, families can find the right vehicle for their new driver without spending all their savings.”

Although it’s hard to convince every driver to put down their phones, fleets do have an option to combat distracted driving within their ranks.
NoCell Technologies has developed a technology that eliminates temptation and improves driver safety.
To learn more about their product and how it can save fleets millions of dollars in insurance claims, we spoke with Corey Woinarowicz, CRO of NoCell Technologies.
“Our platform allows fleet managers to supervise cell phone usage while driving a company vehicle… If the driver needs access to a navigation app, an ELD, or a camera, the product allows drivers to access those while physically removing all other apps from the phone.”

By Bill Bishop, SVP of Sales and Marketing, FLD Remarketing
Over the years that our team at FLD Remarketing has been compiling our quarterly White Metal Market Report, the fleet space – and more appropriately, the used vehicle market – has certainly seen its share of ups and downs.
Now, after what seems like one challenge after the next – lack of available vehicles, supply chain snafus, industry consolidation – I’m happy to report that things may be returning to some semblance of normal.
Looking at the used market at the half-way point of Q2, supply remains “snug” as new vehicle availability is not back to pre-pandemic levels and fleets continue to hold on to used assets until they’re certain they can get new ones.
