Work Truck Week Preview: Popular Annual Conference Pulls into Indy 2024 Work Truck Week Preview: Popular Annual Conference Pulls into Indy

By Tod Trousdell, Fleet Marketing Consultant and Partner/RobertsTrousdell Communications

With perhaps the biggest trade event of the year – Work Truck Week – just days away, many questions swirl around the industry. As a fleet marketing consultant, there are surely a few things I’ll be anxious to learn more about when the NTEA Work Truck Week touches down.

One of the things I am most anxious to see at this year’s show is how the OEMs will present their offerings after seemingly going “all in” on EVs the past few years.

In addition to the legions of fleets and services providers that consider Work Truck Week their biggest show of the year, organizers say many new exhibitors are attending this year’s show.

Actionable Data: Creating a Holistic View of the Driver

There is data flowing to a fleet manager like an open firehose from many sources and in varying formats.

To make the data actionable a few things need to happen: automation, normalization, and aggregation.

Fleet managers need to consume several different types of data to create a holistic view of the driver and accomplish their driver safety goals.

Data normalization is generally considered the development of clean data. To create the sought-after holistic view of the driver, data needs to be aggregated into one central system or platform.

To learn more about creating and using actionable data, download the free SuperVision e-book ‘Using Data to Improve Driver Safety’ by clicking here.

Diving in the Deep

Fleet Street Remarketing President and Owner Steve Bender’s passion for diving has him starring in a new History Channel TV series called ‘Lost U boats of World War II.’

For Bender, the show is more than a passing fancy, it’s the culmination of decades of knocking around the Caribbean in search of an elusive flash of gold or a rotting ship hull and the mere possibility that one day he would hit the proverbial jackpot.

In addition to re-energizing his love for adventure and treasure hunting, Bender said the best thing to come out of the show was his desire to push Fleet Street to even greater heights in the coming months and years.

“I know it might sound corny to some people,” Bender said. “But the truth is this show has taught me that we’re all going to face adversity whether it’s business or life and if you put your best into everything…good things are going to come back to you.”

NYC Improves City Vehicle Fleet Safety With Cameras

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has issued Executive Order (EO) 39, which will address truck and bus safety for the city’s fleet and contracted units.

City contractors will have new safety requirements, including preparing fleet safety plans, increasing driver training, adopting telematics, and adding 360-degree cameras to mitigate the impacts of visual impairments for operators.

The city explained that an estimated 5,600 contracted trucks will be impacted by this executive order. The city also operates nearly 7,500 trucks and 10,000 contracted school buses, meaning the EO will result in safety enhancements for over 23,000 trucks and buses traveling throughout New York City daily.

Graph Proves Speeding Won’t Actually Get You There Much Faster

The STEMbite YouTube channel applies science and math theories to everyday situations. Illustrating the inverse relationship between the speed you go and the time it takes you to get somewhere is a bit of a downer.

While it takes 90 seconds to cover one mile at 40 mph, it takes just 60 seconds to cover the same mile at 60 mph. Speeding up from 40 mph to 60 mph will save you 30 seconds for every mile you travel. So, while you’re weaving through traffic and risking a ticket, that 30 mile trip is over a mere 7.5 minutes sooner.

The amount of time you save diminishes as your speed increases. If you really push the needle up from 60 mph to 80 mph, you only save 15 seconds/mile.

Will Buying an EV Protect You from Car Theft?

Vehicle thefts in North America were up 2 percent in the first half of 2023, setting an alarming trend for the latter half of the year and the opening of 2024.

Looking closer at the data reveals an interesting carve-out: electric vehicles seem much less likely to be stolen by thieves than comparable internal combustion engine cars.

Thieves likely have to worry about the market they’re attempting to sell a stolen EV in; if it’s a different continent, and they’re shipping to South America, the Middle East, or Africa or somewhere, it’s likely the local market doesn’t have the infrastructure or general support for electric cars. In other words, if the market you’re selling to doesn’t want the product, why steal it for them?

PHEVs: A Catch?

By Kate Harrison, Co-founder, MoveEV

At first glance, PHEVs seem like the perfect solution and the market has embraced them accordingly. Last year alone, PHEV sales in the U.S. surged by 20 percent, with more than 860,000 now on the roads.

But there’s a catch. The environmental and financial benefits of PHEVs are contingent upon one crucial factor: regular charging. When fleet drivers neglect to charge their PHEVs and rely excessively on gasoline, the advantages rapidly dissipate.

Companies must adopt a pro-charging approach. Installing charging infrastructure at workplaces, facilitating on-the-go charging, creating a home-first charging policy, and reimbursing employees for home charging are all essential steps.

By ensuring that PHEVs are charged regularly, companies can truly harness their potential for sustainability.
