FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse: What You Need to Know FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse: What You Need to Know

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires that individuals who hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and their employers follow alcohol and drug testing rules.

The FMCSA Clearinghouse contains records of violations, including positive drug or alcohol test results and test refusals. It is the responsibility of employers to query the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse database.

To help make this process easier, we’ve launched a new solution to help automate the query process. Supervision’s Clearinghouse Monitoring service is integrated with our Continuous License Monitoring program and works with your existing active driver roster.

ADAS Repairs

Crash avoidance features have proven safety benefits, but some vehicle owners report problems with the technology following repairs.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
surveyed owners of vehicles equipped with front crash prevention, blind spot detection or rearview or other visibility-enhancing cameras.

Under normal circumstances, these features are quite resilient. But vehicle repairs can make it necessary to calibrate the cameras and sensors that the features rely on to ensure they work properly — a process that can be complicated and expensive.

“Most of the more than 3,000 owners we contacted said they had never needed to have their crash avoidance features repaired, but for the minority of owners who did, the problems weren’t always resolved easily,” said IIHS Senior Research Scientist Alexandra Mueller, who designed the survey.

In-Road Wireless EV Charging Comes to Indiana

The Indiana wireless EV charging project is apparently the first of its kind in the US. The system is based on a new form of magnetized concrete developed by the German startup Magment GmbH.

“Dynamic charging is the future solution for charging electric vehicles where devices installed in highway pavements will deliver electrical energy to battery electric vehicles on the road using a magnetic field,” Magment explained. “An antenna mounted to the vehicle bottom passes through the magnetic field generating an electrical current that charges the batteries.”

bp Plans to Invest $1 Billion in EV Charging Across US by 2030

A cornerstone of bp’s $1 billion investment includes an intention to bring fast charging infrastructure to Hertz locations in more than a dozen major cities.  bp currently offers 22,000 EV charge points worldwide.

A number of the fast-charging installations will include gigahubs locations. These are large-scale fast charging hubs, such as one location previously announced by bp and Hertz at Los Angeles International Airport. The hubs will serve rideshare and taxi drivers, car rental customers and the general public at high-demand locations, such as airports. The buildout will be informed by telematics from Hertz’s fleet of connected cars.

How Many EV Owners Run Out of Charge? The Number Might Surprise You

As electric vehicles charge headlong into the future, early adopters and auto-makers have both been learning a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of electric vehicles. Until very recently, range and range anxiety have been some of the biggest obstacles to the proliferation of electric vehicles.

According to a study by Escalent, 64% of EV owners polled have never come close to running out of charge, while 28% say they have come close. Only 8% of EV owners have run out of charge completely. Furthermore, the research noted that 73% of owners expect to charge their electric vehicles at home. While this data is encouraging for EV owners, it’s also indicative that range fear may be largely unwarranted.

How to Identify and Address Driver Burnout

With truck drivers constantly on the go, it can be easy to miss the signs of stress and burnout that can quickly lead to driver turnover. Job stress has also been linked to increased workplace accidents and even health problems. What can fleet managers do to address this?

Exhaustion is the earliest warning sign of burnout that leads to turnover. It’s about feeling chronically tired, not just physically tired. “It’s important to catch people in the early stage of burnout, because their burnout at that point is only isolated to themselves,” explained Max Farrell, CEO and co-founder of WorkHound. “But, as it gets worse, that burnout impacts more people and creates greater risk.”

By FMW Editorial Staff

In October 2021, Wheels and Donlen merged to become a mobility leading provider of financing and fleet management solutions.

In an interview with FMW, Shlomo Crandus, CEO, shared his thoughts about the foundation for launching the newly-expanded company.

“In the short-term, there’s not going to be a lot of disruption or change for our clients because we’re taking a measured approach towards integration,” says Crandus. “Our focus is really on coming through for clients and giving them what they’re used to, but also new capabilities that they’re going to need.”
